The Cataract Canyon Rafting Leaders have set up a Pictured Rocks trip with camping at the Tahquamenon Falls State Park for July 17-20.
We will be camping at the lower falls campground and space is limited.
Please contact Dan Flynn (810) 588-8765 or email: A2SkiSummer@gmail.com to let me know if you are interested.
Basic Itinerary:
Due to the distance to pictured rocks 1.7 hrs. drive those days will be fully remote from the campsite.
Pictured Rocks:
The name "Pictured Rocks" comes from the streaks of mineral stain that decorate the cliffs. Stunning colors occur when groundwater oozes out of cracks and trickles down the rock face. Iron (red and orange), copper (blue and green), manganese (brown and black), and limonite (white) are among the most common color-producing minerals.
The best way to see the geologic layers and colors of the Pictured Rocks cliffs is from the water. Late afternoon or early evening sunlight brings out the richest colors.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park:
Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres and stretches 13-plus miles in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The park is home to multiple campgrounds, overnight lodging facilities, a boat launch, more than 35 miles of trails and multiple overlooks to the Upper and Lower Falls.
The 200-feet-wide Upper Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The river’s amber color is caused by tannins leached from the cedar, spruce and hemlock trees in the swamps drained by the river, and the extremely soft water churned by the action of the falls causes the river’s trademark large amounts of foam. The Lower Falls can be viewed from the riverbank, all-accessible Ronald A. Olson Island Bridge over the Tahquamenon River or by a rowboat rented from a park concession. Drone use is prohibited.

The Creature Conservancy is located at 4940 Ann Arbor Saline Rd.
You can find out more about their mission and work on their website.
The Creature Conservancy is a non-profit zoological organization with the goal of educating people of all ages about exotic animals in order to promote a better understanding of the animals with which we share our world and therefore an interest in protecting the environment. Our mission is simple: “Conservation Through Education.”
An abandoned alligator was the catalyst that led to the establishment of The Creature Conservancy. One morning in August 2005, Steve Marsh (our founder and head curator) discovered a wooden box containing a 42-inch long American alligator that was left on the doorstep of the nearby veterinary clinic. Based on the health of the alligator, it was most likely a well-cared for pet whose owner was no longer able to care for it. Upon lengthy discussions with local and state animal rescue organizations, it became apparent that exotic animals, like this alligator, are often re-homed or abandoned due to various factors (such as: difficulty and expense of care, impending moves to areas where the animal cannot be housed, lifestyle changes, etc.). Since the discovery of “Al” (the alligator), The Creature Conservancy [a 501(c)(3) non-profit] has grown in both size and scope. We currently provide homes to more than 300 individual animals from roughly 70 different species. These animals are former exotic pets, animals that came to us from other zoos, or animals that we acquired from USDA-approved establishments to become educational ambassadors.
Our animals represent their species to our visitors, and we carefully adhere to the five freedoms of animal welfare to ensure that they are healthy and comfortable doing so. The animals that live at The Creature Conservancy receive the highest quality nutrition and their diets are regularly monitored by our staff under the guidance of veterinarians. Our animals live in safe environments that are designed with their physical and mental health in mind. Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital generously provides low cost (and sometimes free) veterinary care to all our animals to ensure that they are healthy and robust. Finally, we have professional animal behavioral staff on our team to see that the animals feel safe, comfortable, and have plenty of enrichment opportunities to engage their minds.
With “Conservation Through Education” as our goal, our weekdays are spent providing summer camps for kids, school field trips, as well as onsite and offsite visits. On the weekends, we are open to the public and feature different educational presentations on our Stone Stage each month. Visitors to our weekend Open Hours get a more close-up view of our animals and have plenty of opportunities to speak directly with our zookeepers, which is something that makes us unique. We also provide fun, interactive programming events throughout the year for people of all ages. No matter what kind of program we offer, an educational component is always threaded throughout to provide our visitors with a rich experience that we hope will positively impact their lives and the world.
The September happy hour will be at TBD!

Between mid-May and mid-June, Cataract Canyon has some of the biggest and most challenging whitewater in the United States. This is a thrill seeker's dream, with stunningly powerful rapids. For those seeking “moderate” excitement, trips in late summer feature rapids that are big fun rolling waves. Spend your days rafting through the pristine Colorado River canyons; as early evening draws near, pull up to a private beach that we will transform into our river hotel. While guests finish setting up their tents, the guides will set up the kitchen and prepare a delicious dinner.
At night we will enjoy stories under the starlight as we commiserate with the guides and fellow guests.

Ski one of the true heavyweights of alpine skiing in the western Austrian Alps

With its formidable expert terrain, impressive snow record and legendary après-ski, St Anton-am-Arlberg is one of the true heavyweights of alpine skiing. But while the steep and deep remains St Anton's big draw, it also has a lot to offer more leisurely skiers, particularly with its recent links to the ski area of neighboring Lech-Zürs. St Anton-am-Arlberg is located in the Tirol province of the western Austrian Alps. St Anton is often described as being in the “Arlberg” region - not an official region per se, but rather an umbrella term used for the collective marketing of the resorts of St Anton, Lech-Zürs and Warth-Schröcken. Skiing in St Anton takes place on both sides of the valley. To the south, Rendl is a small and uncrowded area of skiing ideal for all levels of skier, which sits both above and below the treeline on mostly north-facing slopes. The bulk of St Anton’s slopes are on its north side, however, which is split into three areas (Gampen, Valluga and Galzig). These mostly south-facing slopes are accessed by several different lifts both close to the village centre and further down the valley. This side is also home to most of the resort’s legendary off-piste. From Galzig, you can also ski over to Stuben, which then provides an onwards link to Lech-Zürs.
