Cross Country Skiing & Snow Shoeing in the Adirondacks

Learn about the winter wonderland of the Adirondack Mountains in New York as you explore by cross-country ski and/or snowshoe!  Choose from different activities each day with expert instructors – or go on your own part of the time.

Lodging: Garnet Hill Lodge 5 nights – North River, NY

Garnet Hill Lodge is centered around a historic log house. Featuring rustic charm and comfortable accommodations, the Log House is located on a hillside over-looking pristine Thirteenth Lake. In addition to the guest rooms located in this charming main building, we also offer guest rooms in our two campus cottages, Tea House, and The Birches, which are nestled in the woods close by.

Costs: March 3-8, 2024, for two, $1,449 trip cost plus estimated flight cost of $518 totals $1,967 per person or $3,934 for two; plus airport parking in Detroit, tips, misc., etc.  Meals: All meals are provided on the trip.

Reservations: each person must make their own trip reservation by contacting the Road Scholar online or by phone; and, each person must make their own airport parking and flight reservations.

Check-in, Registration, Orientation, & Welcome Dinner Sunday

Afternoon – Program Registration and Orientation: Please register before 5:00 p.m. at the hotel front desk.  You will receive any materials that reflect any changes and new information.

We will enjoy a special welcome reception at Garnet Hill’s Log House Restaurant while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.  The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions.

Sunday Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m.

After Dinner: Immediately following dinner, our Group Leader will review Monday’s activities in detail, giving you an opportunity to sign up for your track choice. We will then be given the opportunity to introduce ourselves and enjoy time visiting by the grand fireplace in the main lodge and continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest.

Schedule: Go to their web site, scroll down to Itinerary, and you can then click on each day for the activities for that day. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Rentals: This program does not include equipment. Nordic XC skis can be rented for the duration of the program from Garnet Hill Lodge at the rate of $70; snowshoes can be rented at $50, both for the program duration.

Getting to the Garnet Hill Lodge in North River, NY

Driving: Ann Arbor to North River, NY - 582 miles, 9-10 hours plus stops

Flying to Albany, NY: fly and take the lodge shuttle, which leaves the airport at 2:00 pm for the 88-minute ride to the Garnet Hill Lodge.  Note: you have to reserve the shuttle when you enroll or call later if you forgot.  Below is one current options with Delta as of 7/16/23.

 Flight example as of 7/27/23 - Delta Air Lines - 10:15 PM - 11:59 PM – Nonstop, $518

Shuttle note: The shuttle from Albany Airport will be leaving at the latest at 2:00 p.m March 3rd.  The drive is about 88 miles.

If you plan on taking the shuttle, please complete and return the shuttle information form that can be found in the information packet.  You will receive a link to it after registering. Upon receipt of the form from you, a Road Scholar staffer will reach out to you confirming your pickup location and shuttle time.
