Still No Approved  2020-2021 Ski Trips

The BOD  met on July 23.

Ski Trip Coordinator Lane Hotchkiss reported on his in-depth conversation with one of our longtime travel agents.

  • 25% of clubs are entering locked-in contracts
  • 25% of clubs are entering escape-clause contracts
  • 50% aren't scheduling trips

Because of the uptick in infections and hospitalizations the Board chose to continue in the current virtual-only status.

Lane reports that travel agents will have ski trip options to offer as late as November this year because travel is so far down.  But, BOD consensus leans toward no ski trips due to the ongoing pandemic.

Sixteen members have signed up.  Twenty sign-ups will allow this trip to adhere to plan and we need to meet that threshold by August 15 for this trip to go forward.

There is also a chance the trip will get cancelled due to changing circumstances with the pandemic leading to stricter public health advisories.

You can join trip leaders in monitoring Traverse area health advisories, along with State of Michigan advisories herehere, and here.   And, latest GT County press release.

Ken Shannon Pretends to be a Butterfly

During a recent cross-state bike ride Ken helped the Monarch Butterfly Migration Study by carrying sensors on his bike.

A touring bike travels at about the same speed as a Monarch.  And, in the future they'll carry their sensors instead of offloading to Ken.  Check it out.

Nobody Hangs Eleven Here
Surfing the Great Lakes

"The surf can flow thick and slushy like a Slurpee or load up with ice the size of golf balls and even bowling balls. Surfers have to be vigilant for sheets of ice as big as parking spaces, as well as changing shore conditions, where fast-forming ice shelves can make escape impossible."
